Two Acclaimed Irish Singer-songwriters, Roesy and Gallie, At Phillip Island Winery, Thursday February 2.

ROESY, FROM COUNTY OFFALY, comes to Phillip Island with an international reputation as a powerful performer and songwriter. He has shared stages with the likes of Billy Bragg, the great Bert Jansch, Ron Sexsmith, Paul Brady, John Martyn, Davy Spillane, Donovan, and Shane MacGowan of the Pogues.

A singer of extraordinary intensity, he can still the heart with his searing vocals and windswept lyrics. His debut album “Sketch the Day, Paint the Night” (2001) was followed by “The Spirit Store” in 2003 and “Only Love is Real” in 2004.

Also in 2004, Roesy was nominated for Best New Irish Act in the Meteor Music Awards of that year. His song “Potosi Mine” was included in the “Diamond Mountain Session Presents” compilation CD, which also featured Sinéad O’Connor, Steve Earle, Natalie Merchant and Sharon Shannon.

He is joined at Phillip Island Winery by Irish-Australian singer Darren Gallagher, Gallie.

In Gallie’s 20-year musical career, he has worked alongside international artists Santana, Chris Isaak and Jimmy Cliff and Australian performers Liz Stringer, Suzannah Espie, Chris Wilson and Shane Howard. He has also opened for Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, KT Tunstall, Glen Tilbrook, Squeeze, Newton Faulkner, Glen Hansard and The Frames.

Gallie’s album, The Occoquan River, was described by Paul Gough, The Inside Sleeve, ABC Radio National, as “brilliant”, and “one of the outstanding releases this year”.

Brian Wise, Off The Record, Triple R, described the title song as “one of the best songs of the year – Australian or International”.

In Australia, each has headlined at major music festivals including the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Nannup Music Festival, Yackandandah Folk Festival, Fleurieu Folk Festival, Moyston Music Fest, Deni Blues and Roots Festival and the Turning Wave Festival.

(And what is a Sonoran Dog? It’s a Mexican-inspired culinary treat particular to Tucson and surrounds and described as “the most delicious hot-dog of all time”.

A Sonoran hot-dog comes wrapped in bacon and grilled until crispy. It’s then stuffed into a split-top roll called a bolillo (pronouced boh-lee-yoh) and topped with pinto beans, chopped tomatoes, grilled and raw onions, mayonnaise, mustard and jalapeño salsa.

Hmmm… might have to add it to the PI Winery menu…)

Live Acoustic Music Every Saturday And Sunday Over Winter

A COSY FIRE, fine wines, fresh food platters and live laid-back acoustic music… that’s the recipe for winter weekends at Phillip Island Winery.

If you’re looking for an escape from the winter chills, why not warm the spirit to the breezy sounds of live acoustic music while taking your time over a big, chewy cabernet merlot or a crisp mouth-filling sauvignon blanc.

There are usually tables available ‘on spec’, but best you book for Saturday or Sunday afternoons – after having been featured on Channel 9′s Postcards, Channel 7′s What’s Up Downunder, and in The Age and Herald Sun, there’s a bit of pressure on the ‘premium seating’ (closest to the fire).

We also have occasional concerts featuring local and visiting acts. Best you keep your eye on the website or our Facebook page for details.

MUSICFEST: 830 ON THE LAWNS… BACK AGAIN 2013

MUSICFEST PHILLIP ISLAND will be back again in 2013 – put a circle around Sunday March 10. With a final tally of 830 for this year’s inaugural event, including the 113 diners in the Enviromeat big marquee, we’re pleased to declare the event a big success!

It was the perfect day. The eclectic mix of rootsy folk and acoustic music and the bush dance in the evening with Paradiddle (that absolutely went off!), plus perfect weather, combined to make a really fun event. Our huge thanks to all the performers who made the day such a success – and MC Gaeton who ran the main stage all day and kept the vibe nice and breezy.

We’ve started booking for next year and considering running a little longer into the evening – we’ll keep you posted (there was a large ’late shift’ who made the trip out to the concert at dusk this year - for Mike McClellan and the Bushdance with Paradiddle).

Our thanks also to all our friends and local business people who helped – to Jeff at Island Marquees, Phillip Island Skip and Toilet Hire, the Davies family (Richie and Sharon) and Enviromeat, Simon and the crew at OptimAV (for the brilliant sound), Trevor and Megan Ryan for the stage, also Rod (for all his help setting up and on the gate) and Jim Barnes from Tallangatta, Greg Price for his ‘second stage’, Dazzle signs, Miekle’s paella’s, Carole and Mary on the gate and our three French backpackers (Louis, Antona and Pierre), Cleeland Bus Lines for the shuttle service, and huge, huge thanks to our classy MC Gaeton and all the fabulous musicians.

Thanks also to Kim, Kathryn and the team at Destination Phillip Island, and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

The fabulous Lisa Miller

Lastly, thanks to the cheerful staff at Phillip Island Winery for all their hard work in making the day such a success.

We’ll be back again next year, bigger and even better – you can bank on it – with another eclectic mix of brilliant ‘rootsy’ songwriters and bands.

Put a circle around Sunday March 10 2013 (Labour Day Weekend) and keep watching this site for news and for details.
