Countdown: Four Weeks To MusicFest 2013

It’s a big bill of acts, but still just $40 (inc GST) entry for a single day ticket, or $60 for a two-day event ticket (inc. GST).

Heading the MUSICFEST 2013 line-up on March 9 is STONEFIELD, the amazing (and now ‘discovered’) earth-rock sister act. They’ve played Galstonbury in the UK, are now signed to Wunderkind/Warner records and are headed for the world.

Bluegrass wizards, THE DAVIDSON BROTHERS

This will be your last chance to see this young band close-up at a laid-back small venue like Phillip Island Winery.

STONEFIELD are joined on Saturday by the equally amazing soul/blues of KIRA PURU and THE BRUISE from Sydney, cruisy reggae-rocker MAT McHUGH and the SEPERATISTA SOUND SYSTEM, local acoustic roots band THE BREWERS OF DISTINCTION, exciting Spanish flamenco band, KARAVANA FLAMENCA, the madhouse folksy junkyard LILY and KING, and iconic Australian songwriter and producer DAVID BRIDIE.

The Sunday concert shifts the focus to a more acoustic/folk-country sound, with Australia’s leading bluegrass exponents, the fabulous DAVIDSON BROTHERS heading the bill, with beautiful songwriter LAURA HILL from SA, multi-aria nominated LISA MILLER, ex-Redgummer HUGH McDONALD, local rockabilly outfit, VAMPIRE BOOGIE, the soul/blues mastery of KUTCHA EDWARDS and Irish Celtic bother/sister combo  THE SIMPSON THREE.Check out STONEFIELD on this You Tube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0HzB8eD3ys

The Amazing Laura Hill To Perform At Phillip Island Winery

THE UBER-DELIGHTFUL South Australian singer songwriter Laura Hill will be performing at the Phillip Island Winery this coming Sunday, 20th January, beginning 1:15pm.

Laura, an ambassador for the O’Neill surfboards brand, and signed to MGM records, has built a national profile for her superbly crafted songs and ‘Eva-Cassidy-like’ vocal style.

With a simply beautiful voice, and stylish acoustic guitar accompaniment, Laura’s songs have a timeless appeal and her arrangements (with her band the Tuesday Bandits) are very engaging and brilliantly constructed.

Laura’s new CD, The Guava Tree (MGM) is superb listening with thoughtful and though-provoking lyrics, laid-back style and beautiful melodies and backing.

It follows her earlier successful CD  Over My Shoulder (MGM) which introduced her to a national following. We think she is destined for big things once word gets out.

For a taste of Laura’s music, you can check her You Tube vids. This one, By My Side, is typical of the quality and appeal of her work:

Mat McHugh and Separatista Sound System join Stonefield in MUSICFEST line-up

MUSICFEST 2013 has now added cruisy songwriter Mat McHugh and his new(ish) band, the Separatista Sound System to its Saturday line-up.

McHugh, whose music is described by Beat magazine as “surfer-cum-roots”, established his name nationally as a songwriter and performer with his former band The Beautiful GirlsHe has toured with John Butler across the United States and Canada, played sell-outs in Japan, toured Europe, the UK and Brazil and recently returned to touring in Australia with his first-ever solo tour.

Nominated for ‘Blues & Roots Work of the Year’ at the APRA Music Awards of 2008 for his song, “I Thought About You” (written by Mat), he has had three further nominations for Blues and Roots work of the year. McHugh’s fourth album with The Beautiful Girls, Spooks, debuted at  No. 1 on the Australian Independent Chart and reached No. 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart.

He has since released two solo albums, Separatista (2008) and Love Come Save Me (2012) and an EP, Go Don’t Stop (2011). Mat McHugh’s style crosses genres – reggae, roots, blues, even folk – and his gritty, direct songwriting has immense appeal for its raw honesty and lean uncluttered musicality. Mat and the Separatista Sound System will be a highlight of MUSICFEST 2013.

With Stonefield, David Bridie and Kira Puru and The Bruise all performing on Saturday March 9th (with an equally impressive line-up on Sunday 10th), MUSICFEST 2013 is an event not to be missed.

MUSICFEST: 830 ON THE LAWNS… BACK AGAIN 2013

MUSICFEST PHILLIP ISLAND will be back again in 2013 – put a circle around Sunday March 10. With a final tally of 830 for this year’s inaugural event, including the 113 diners in the Enviromeat big marquee, we’re pleased to declare the event a big success!

It was the perfect day. The eclectic mix of rootsy folk and acoustic music and the bush dance in the evening with Paradiddle (that absolutely went off!), plus perfect weather, combined to make a really fun event. Our huge thanks to all the performers who made the day such a success – and MC Gaeton who ran the main stage all day and kept the vibe nice and breezy.

We’ve started booking for next year and considering running a little longer into the evening – we’ll keep you posted (there was a large ’late shift’ who made the trip out to the concert at dusk this year - for Mike McClellan and the Bushdance with Paradiddle).

Our thanks also to all our friends and local business people who helped – to Jeff at Island Marquees, Phillip Island Skip and Toilet Hire, the Davies family (Richie and Sharon) and Enviromeat, Simon and the crew at OptimAV (for the brilliant sound), Trevor and Megan Ryan for the stage, also Rod (for all his help setting up and on the gate) and Jim Barnes from Tallangatta, Greg Price for his ‘second stage’, Dazzle signs, Miekle’s paella’s, Carole and Mary on the gate and our three French backpackers (Louis, Antona and Pierre), Cleeland Bus Lines for the shuttle service, and huge, huge thanks to our classy MC Gaeton and all the fabulous musicians.

Thanks also to Kim, Kathryn and the team at Destination Phillip Island, and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

The fabulous Lisa Miller

Lastly, thanks to the cheerful staff at Phillip Island Winery for all their hard work in making the day such a success.

We’ll be back again next year, bigger and even better – you can bank on it – with another eclectic mix of brilliant ‘rootsy’ songwriters and bands.

Put a circle around Sunday March 10 2013 (Labour Day Weekend) and keep watching this site for news and for details.
